I will join your coach party for the day and for a captivating tour through Dartmoor National Park, a land of sweeping moorland, dramatic granite tors, and ancient mystery. As we wind through this legendary landscape, I will introduce you to tales of history, folklore and everyday life in one of England’s most enchanting regions.
We drive into the National Park near Bovey Tracey, the gateway to the Moor, known for its arts and crafts heritage. From there, we venture deep into the heart of Dartmoor to Widecombe-in-the-Moor, a picture-perfect village surrounded by rolling hills and ancient farms. You'll have time to explore its peaceful charm, visit the iconic Cathedral of the Moor and hear the story of Old Uncle Tom Cobley and his infamous ride.
Passing Lustleigh, often called one of the prettiest villages in Devon, where thatched cottages nestle in blooming gardens. Nearby Moretonhampstead, once a busy wool town, offers a glimpse into Dartmoor’s working past and vibrant present as we drive through the village.
Our journey continues across the wild open moor to Two Bridges and Postbridge, home to the iconic clapper bridge — a prehistoric stone crossing steeped in legend and beauty. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies grazing freely on the heath!
In Princetown, we’ll pause at the bleak yet fascinating Dartmoor Prison, allegedly built by Napoleonic prisoners and still a working institution. Its stark presence contrasts with the surrounding wildness and tells a story of hardship, endurance and escape.
Finally, we’ll travel through Merrivale, where Bronze Age stone rows and burial sites dot the windswept moorland, offering a haunting connection to Dartmoor’s ancient past.
Throughout the tour, I will share fascinating stories, local legends and quirky facts that bring Dartmoor to life. Expect breathtaking views, a few surprises and an unforgettable day in this extraordinary corner of Devon.
